Finally after the most open Grand Slam in years TheBoss94 the best next gen player who has been simply the best player throughout the year Won his First Grand Slam Title at Roland Garros in emphatic fashion only losing one set a long the way to Andry3000. He beat VMoe in straight sets in the final 6-4 6-4 7-5.
As the tournament came closer players were wondering if some of the best players in the world would be competing at the biggest clay court tournament in the world. And the speculation became a reality when Pidzi, Vramvrim and also Inseedious did not compete therefore leaving the window open for a new Grand Slam champion.
After a long clay court season one player stood out and it was TheBoss94 who racked up 2 Master titles in Monte Carlo and Madrid beating high profile players along the way but also reaching 3 other Clay tournaments Finals at Barcelona, BMW Open and Rome masters. Other players who were considered favourite were Vmoe who Won back to back Indian Wells and Miami the 'Sunshine Double' only played one clay tournament losing to AlexJasmins at the QF of the Madrid Open but missed the other tournaments due to injury but still posed a threat in any surface at any given day.
Others were called outsiders for the event such as Mignogna who beat TheBoss94 at the Barcelona Final and reached the final of Monte Carlo along with AndyMuzza posed a threat due to their relentless defensive display which could break down opponents, Others such as Mohd95 who beat Boss and won the BMW Open, Andry who also won at Nice winning his first ATP title along with Pablo who won in the hometown Estoril, Filas the Portuguese powerhouse and his fellow contryman AlexJasmin who previously won a GS in Australia back in 2013 were in contention.
The upper half of the draw saw TheBoss94 come up against Andry3000 in Round 4 which the No1 Seed struggled to get past a Agressive opponent but did so in 4 sets 6-0 4-6 6-0 7-6 in which proved to be the only Set he would lose during this tournament. The only suprise in this side of the draw would be GOBI84 who reached his first GS QF without playing a single set along the way. Kenos faced Don in which he prevailed in 5 set rollercoaster match in which players were finding hard to find consistency throughout it. Filas beat Dreddy therefore setting up a match against Kenos who won the first two sets in quick fashion 6-2 6-1 but went on to lose in 5 sets after a mixture of fatigue and Filas level rising made it tough for Kenos to close it out. Boss cruised past GOBI84 losing one single game and delivering 2 bagels along the way setting his match vs Filas in which he won in 3 sets 6-2 6-4 7-5 to reach his first Major Final.
Bottom half of the draw had a star studded line up which consistent in Vmoe, Mignogna, AndyMuzza, Mohd95 and eloymm. Vmoe went quietly and done his business sailing through to the QF in which he faced Mohd who had just defeated Eloymm in straight sets. Vmoe proved to much for Mohd and was able to sail through into the SF without losing a single set. Mignogna faced Pablo and it proved to be a long 5 setter in which the portuguese player gave everything he had but still could not get past the Italians defence and consistency and lost 4-6 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-4. Other Round 4 matches had AndyMuzza come up against the the unseeded and Runner up in the French Open back in 2014 setting up an intriguing match in which failed to meet its expectations after AndyMuzza lashed out on one of the ball kids and after multiple violations for swearing and smacking balls out of the stadium was disqualified. C4 faced Mignogna and in a tough match and contrast of style the Frenchman came through after Mignogna could not continue due to a lower back injury.
Just like that we had the build for 'The Match Of The Century' two old foes collided for a place in the Final in which Vmoe86 had never reached after losing the previous 12 SF of all the GS matches he played. In tough Windy conditions Vmoe won the first set after a long tough exhange between the two C4 reached a set point on the german serve but could not convert and would go on to lose the next 3 games and lose the set. Second Set Vmoe took control of the match winning it fairly quick in a one sided set 6-1 but third set proved to be the rise of the mercurial character that is C4 he served for the set at 5-4 but could not close it out, the set was decided in the tiebreak in which C4 and reducing the deficit to 2 sets to one. Fourth set proved to be a one way road as Vmoe consistency and C4 exhausted mentally after a long battle to win the third set proved to be his downfall as he went down 6-3 and like that the Vmoe Curse had been broken 13 time lucky.
In the final we had The Next Gen vs The Old guard in which Vmoe came in favourite due to his experience but he had never played a GS final and neither did TheBoss94 so you could say it was an even playing field. Match started off players trading blows in long games which went to deuces in which the German took the first break of the match and was up 4-2 but could not substain this high level of play and focus after losing his first two points on his serve due to errors and got broken to love and his opponent took full advantage and upped his level to take the next 4 games to win the first set 6-4. Second set Boss game began to rise and finding his rhytm and it was to much for his opponent who could not do much about it and won it as well 6-4. He was just one set away from being in the history books could he seal the win or could Vmoe come back and make an incredible comeback. After the second set Vmoe took a different approach and decided to be more agressive he may have been down two sets but he wasnt going to give up first game he was 0-40 on his serve but managed to hold and break his opponent serve and led 5-2. Renown for his losing record after leading 5-2 Vmoe attempted to not let his past trick come back to haunt him could he prevent himself from losing the next 5 games in typical fashion?
Boss done his part and held to let Vmoe serve it out but he sucumbed under pressure and and went on to lose 5 straight games in the only way he can and like that we had the Roland Garros 2017 Champion TheBoss94 who was the superior player on the final proving his name in history and breaking the old guard dominance in the Grand Slam Congratulations for a great tournament in losing a set throughout the tournament defeating many big names and big congratulations to Vmoe86 in reaching his first GS and breaking the curse along with a great tournament.
After the match both players exhanged kind words Vmoe86 said 'Congrats to TheBoss, I played very well, almost every game went to deuce and everything I threw at TheBoss, he dealt with amazingly. The Champion also praised his opponent 'Was great to be part of it. I'm really really happy and I amazed myself, really. Congrats to the most fair and kind player in tour, Vmoe'
Now that the New Generation has found its way to challenge the best players, winning the Masters and Grand Slam we head to Wimbledon with TheBoss94 being the big favourite.
