Written by Cro Morgan

Just a month after having to deal with the disappointment of losing a Grand Slam final, Norberto claimed the ultimate revenge in the rematch with Baghdad SIMbad, 7-6 4-6 7-5 6-3, and was crowned the Wimbledon Champion.

At Roland Garros a month ago Norberto had lost his No. 1 ranking and the chance at a first major, but on the lush green grass of Wimbledon all of those memories were banished as the Austrian was presented the winner’s trophy by the Duke of Kent.

Coming onto Centre Court at 2pm you could cut the atmosphere with a knife, the British crowd eager to see a home victory, but full of respect and admiration for the man who was intent on spoiling the party.

The opening set was particularly edgy affair, both men eager to give nothing away easily, knowing that the other would bury them upon any sign of weakness. In the opening set tiebreak Norberto reigned in his aggression just enough to be solid enough to wrestle away the tiebreak.

The opening set went a long way to settling both players and the match began to open up nicely thereafter. A single break in the second and leading 4-2 in the third Baghdad was in command, but then a moment of genius from Norberto who returned a smash that Baghdad should have buried with a ripped forehand up the line that brought even the most patriotic of supporters to their feet.

With the break restored and invigorated by the shot of the tournament, Norberto elevated his game into the stratosphere crunching returns off seemingly winning serves and finding his targets off the ground seemingly at will. He broke again to claim the third and ran out to 3-0 in the fourth as Baghdad could only look on in awe at the level his opponent was maintaining.

Nothing could knock the Austrian off his stride now and he served out to love and leaped into the air as applause reverberated around the Court. His vanquished opponent, he had nothing but praise for his conqueror.”Sometimes you just have to say too good, and this is one of those times. I would like to congratulate my opponent for his win here, he was the better man today. He showed why he is without doubt the most formidable force in ITST, a sign of a champion is having the ability to turn a match around when down and out, and today, he did just that.”

A turnaround indeed it was, but the result is NorbertoH is the Wimbledon Champion.
