In three could-have-gone-either-way sets, Gapon captured his first tour title, narrowly defeating Sekir3000 in the championship match of the Nottingham challenger, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. The two combatants were evenly matched, but it was Gapon who secured the most important points late in the contest, improving to 16-12 by harnessing the grass court title.
In defeat, Sekir3000’s match record took another hit, now 15-22.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Gapon: “It was very hard match for me. In last two sets, Sekir played a bit better than me, making more winners and less unforced errors. At 5-4 for Sekir in last set, I saved 5 or 6 match points on my serve and finally win on tiebreak. I want to thank my opponent for the nice final we played."
